TN Visa for NAFTA Professionals

  • Qualified citizens of Canada and Mexico may temporarily enter the U.S. . under the TN classification to participate in commercial activities at professional level.

Eligibility for Canadian Citizens

  • Canadian citizens can apply as TN at a port of entry without a visa.
  • They must provide proof of citizenship, a letter from the employer, and an assessment of credentials.

Canadians

Eligibility for Mexican Citizens

  • Mexican citizens need a TN visa, which they must apply for at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico.
  • Once the visa is approved, they can apply for admission to a U.S. port of entry.

Mexicans

Initial Admission and Family Period

  • Both Canadians and Mexicans are initially admitted for up to three years under the TN.
  • Family members (spouses and children under 21) may be eligible for TD status, but they cannot work in the U.S. and can study.
