F-1 Visa for Students

  • Classification F-1: To study temporarily in institutions certified by SEVP.
  • Permanence: Allows you to stay as long as you maintain status.
  • After Studying: They must transfer, change status, extend or leave.
  • Grace Period: 60 days to prepare to leave.

Restriction

Change of State from B-1/B-2 to F-1 in the U.S.

  • Change of status: Regulations prohibit studying in the U.S. under status B-1/B-2.
  • Essential requirement: People in B-1/B-2 must obtain F-1 or M-1 status before enrolling in classes.
  • Status violation: Enrolling in classes under B-1/B-2 results in a violation and does not allow you to extend or change status.

Extension

OPT STEM Extension

  • USCIS allows F-1 students with STEM degrees to extend their OPT up to 17 additional months.
  • Eligibility: Only students who are employed or will be employed by an employer in the USCIS E-Verify program are eligible.
  • Request: Report information changes and responsibilities to the DSO and pay fees.

F-1 and Adjustment of Status

Do not travel outside the U.S. . if you had F-1 status when applying for Adjustment of Status (Form I-485) unless you have a travel permit or permanent resident approval by USCIS, as it could abandon your application and affect your return as an F-1 student.
